According to BBC News UK, despite pressure from Members of Parliament, Ministers will not criminalize the act of forcing another into a nonconsensual marriage.  Currently, forced marriage is addressed under the UK’s civil law – only the act of violating a forced marriage protection order is grounds for criminal sanctions.  Proponents of criminalizing the act of forcing another into marriage want to send a clear public policy message that they believe will deter forced marriages.  Opponents fear that criminalizing the cultural practice will merely drive it underground and diminish the protections available to victims.  LEARN MORE: Forced marriage crime ruled out by ministers, BBC News UK (September 14, 2011).
