Elizabeth Smart’s ranks among the most widely publicized U.S. missing child cases. After abducting 14-year-old Elizabeth from her family’s Salt Lake City home at knifepoint, her captor conducted a hasty ‘marriage’ ceremony before raping her. He tethered Elizabeth between two trees and threatened to kill her and her family should she attempt to escape. She spent the next nine months as the ‘plural wife’ and prisoner of her abductor and rapist, a homeless street preacher, who repeatedly sexually assaulted her. Elizabeth Smart, now twenty-three years old, has signed on as ABC’s new missing-child consultant.
